Styled and repotted mid summer 2003
April 2005 - Some areas have filled in since last year. I shortened the right bottom branch to help center the tree over the trunk. It look more balanced this way. I defoliated the tree about a month ago, so the leave are a bit smaller than they will be and the tree will be more filled in that it is now.
This has been long over due. I have needed to root prune this tree for at least 2 years now, and I just had to take the time to do it. May 2007
Don't let the foliage fool you, it is only changing out last years foliage for new growth for this year. It will fill in just a couple of weeks. Notice how much better it sits in the pot now. This tree has been an absolute joy to grow and develop. In the next few weeks I hope to really capture a great picture of it. May 2007 |
Spring has come and the ficus has defoliated so that the new leaves can grow. It is a good chance to actually look at the branches and trunk line. I removed a few branches and wire more out. There was a bald area that I was able to cover by moving branches. April 2004.
Here is the tree defoliated. Notice how the branches have really developed compared to last year. Mar 2006
This tree has looked better than this. I cleaned the trunk last winter with some white vinegar to remove some mold. However it dried out a few fine branches along the trunk. So now I have the bare spot right in the middle. The nice thing about ficus is their ability to recover, so it won't be long until I have a nice full canopy again. Sept 2006
The amazing thing about ficus is the ability to root prune them drastically and they won't even slow their growth at all. As you can see I took about 80% of the roots. May 2007
Here we are 4 months later and you can see how this tree has recovered from the root pruning. This tree is just a joy to take care of, and maintain. Sept 2007 |
